“...while the story magic pours over me.” is
the last line of my favorite poem in Did You See What I Saw? Poems about
School. Both as a child and as an adult, story was and is magic for me.
I was a teacher, a reading specialist, and a college instructor before
following a childhood dream. I wanted to be a children’s book author. What
I enjoyed most about my career as an educator was sharing wonderful books with children and
teachers. Now I do author visits at schools, conferences, and libraries and
share my own poetry books, early chapter books, biographies, and picture
books for both young and older children.
I
started writing about what I know. Did You See What I Saw? Poems about
School was my first published book . Later on,
My Teacher for
President was published. That book came right out of my
classroom experiences.
The
world of the teeny tiny has always fascinated me. The star of my
Teeny
Tiny Ghost series is so frightened he scares himself! Watch him cope in
his teeny tiny world as he encounters bullies and monsters.
I
love history!
Or I
do now.
When
I was a kid, history seemed like a boring collection of dates and events
that had to be memorized. Once I discovered that stories make up history,
and began to examine the lives of people who helped shape the past, I
started to look at the world in a new way. My newest book, Colonial
Voices: Hear Them Speak, followed Voices of Ancient Egypt and
Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books. Amelia Earhart: Fly She
Did, Johnny Appleseed: His Trail of Trees, and Voices of the
Oregon Trail are under contract.
I also love to write about the wacky, wonderful world of
school. My first book, Did You See What I Saw? Poems about School,
continues to speak to today's students. The poems romp through the bus
stop, the playground, the hallways, the chicken pox, the classrooms,
holidays, and the joy of reading. My Teacher for President shares the
devotion of teachers in a humorous way, as the reader watches Mrs.
Robbins work her way through daily duties similar to those performed in
the White House. And This Year Will Be the Best, due out in
2011, celebrates days to come as youngsters gather in the classroom to
share goals, wishes, hopes and dreams for the new school year.
So
welcome to my site. It was created by my husband Earl to share my
background, books,
author visits to schools, and how I love to bring the
magic of story to kids, parents, teachers, librarians, and writers.
